Connecting and resisting- Irish practitioners’ experiences of working with parents, CPVA and NVR.

Abstract
Many parents and practitioners who work with them describe feelings of fear and hopelessness when they first encounter child to parent violence and abuse (CPVA). There are many questions including what is this problem? How can we talk about it? What can we do to end abuse, violence and fear in families?

We describe outcomes from research in Ireland that asked practitioners about the elements of NVR they found helpful in their work with the parents and families living with CPVA. We share their suggestions about support for practitioners using NVR with parents. We also provide a clear definition of the problem of CPVA that could be useful for practitioners, researchers and policy makers. Our definition of the problem of CPVA in Ireland is informed by our interviews with 7 practitioners working with families. The research was carried out via secure online platforms as one to one interviews with 7 practitioners in different parts of Ireland. We asked about their experiences of using NVR intervention model in their work. They used NVR in their work with parents in group work, one to one/ two in person sessions and/ or remote methods.

We introduce the NVR Ireland Network of practitioners and researchers and outline the benefits of NVR and this Network for developing connections and dissolving resistance. We share the connecting and resisting elements of NVR helpful in their work with parents. We talk about connections practitioners make with families using NVR and the kinds of connections available through practitioner support networks. These connections facilitate practitioners to support each other and families resisting abusive/ destructive behaviour.

At the interactive conference workshop, we present the research findings and facilitate a workshop with pauses for small group discussions based on delegates responses to what we share, the questions we suggest and delegates’ own experiences.
